📝 Tips and Precautions for Traveling through Orlando Airport (MCO)

❓ Quick Questions Before Traveling through MCO

⏰ How early should I arrive?

The airport asks you to be at security 2 hours before departure. Travelers add margin at peak times: parking and security lines are the two biggest time thieves.

🚕 Is there a taxi I should avoid?

Reviews concentrate overcharging and reckless driving reports at some taxi companies, Quick Cab above all. Mears is the best-rated option, especially for the Disney area, and every taxi must use the meter.

🚗 Is it worth renting a car at MCO?

Yes, if you read the contract carefully: several agencies present insurance and toll plans as mandatory when they are optional. Programs that skip the counter save the longest waits.

📶 Can I rely on the airport Wi-Fi?

For basic use, yes. The free "MCO Internet" network slows down when the airport is crowded, so an eSIM is safer if you need data from the moment you land.

⚠️ Critical Points: Smart Traveler's Manual

🅿️ Garages that fill up

Garages A, B and C fill up almost every day at peak times, and drivers are sent to the economy lots.

💡 Suggestion: the only reservable spots are in Garage C, Level 4 (USD 32 per day). Otherwise plan on the economy lots and add 30–60 minutes for the shuttle.

🛂 Security lines

The most reported bottleneck in the airport, and gates 1–59 and 70–129 have separate checkpoints.

💡 Suggestion: book a free MCO Reserve time slot when available, and check your gate number before choosing a checkpoint.

🧳 Slow baggage

Waits of 45 minutes are common, and international arrivals into Terminal C can take one to two hours.

💡 Suggestion: travel carry-on only if you can, and keep medication and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.

🚗 Pressure at the rental counter

Insurance, roadside assistance and toll plans added without clear consent are the most repeated complaint.

💡 Suggestion: decline out loud what you do not want, photograph the signed contract and record a video of the car at pickup and return.

MCO can be smooth if you plan for its weak points. These tips come from our updated guides and from recent passenger reviews.

🧳 Before You Go

Arrival time

  • Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 hours before at the counter if you check bags, 2 at security and 1 at the gate.
  • Add margin at peak times: if the garages are full, the detour to an economy lot plus the shuttle can add up to an hour.
  • Very early flights: PreCheck lanes open at 4:00 am. Passengers boarding earlier report being sent to the standard line.

Security

  • PreCheck or CLEAR: frequent travelers call them essential at MCO, although they can also get congested at peak times.
  • Check wait times: the airport publishes live estimates for each checkpoint. See the security guide.

Getting from the airport

  • Taxis: insist on the meter and check that it starts at zero. The airport's reference fares are USD 38–45 to downtown or International Drive and USD 52–68 to the Disney resorts.
  • Ride-hailing apps: follow the "Rideshare" signs, not "Ground Transportation", and confirm the plate before getting in.
  • Rental cars: the supplemental liability insurance is optional in Florida, and the airport's Visitor Toll Pass has no subscription fee. See the car rental guide.

🛫 At the Airport

Food

  • Eat before security in Terminals A and B: the food court in the public area has the widest choice, while several gate areas have few open places during the renovation works.
  • Night flights: most places after security close early. McDonald's, Dunkin' and McCoy's To-Go are open 24 hours before security.
  • Terminal C: the best options are after security, in the Palm Court.

Connectivity and charging

  • Carry a power bank: several reviews report outlets without power, especially at gates 1–59.
  • Mobile data: an eSIM gives you your own connection when the Wi-Fi slows down.

Baggage and lost items

  • Put a tracker in your checked bag and photograph the bag tag before handing it over.
  • Lost something? On the plane, contact your airline. In the terminal, use the airport's online form or the offices on Level 1 of Terminals A and C.

🔁 Connections and Long Layovers

Connections

  • International to domestic: you collect your bag, clear customs, re-check it and go through security again. Use the layover calculator in our connections guide.
  • Terminal C: add 20–30 minutes if your trip involves it: train, a walk through the garage and long corridors.
  • Trains out of service: when a train is down, the transfer is by bus, which adds time.

Where to rest

  • Hyatt Regency: inside the terminal, with day use from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. See the hotel guide.
  • VIP lounges: often crowded and with waitlists. Delta Sky Club and Plaza Premium Lounge get the best ratings. See the lounges guide.
  • Sleeping in the terminal: possible but uncomfortable. Almost everything closes around 9:00 pm, so buy food and water before then.

Exploring the airport

  • Art and views: MCO has several art exhibitions. Additionally, the top floor of the Terminal Top parking garage offers excellent views of the airfield and, sometimes, fireworks from the parks.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families and Reduced Mobility

Traveling with children

  • Nursing rooms and Mamava pods in all terminals, before and after security.
  • Park souvenirs: Disney, Universal, SeaWorld and Epic Universe stores before security in Terminals A and B.

Reduced mobility

  • Request wheelchair assistance from your airline in advance and confirm it again at check-in: reviews report long waits at peak times.
  • Accessible parking: spaces in all garages and lots, free for vehicles with special equipment or a disabled veteran plate.
